AALAS Webinar: Connecting Facility Design to Operations: Role of the Laboratory Animal Professional

Laboratory animal professionals have a nuanced role to inform the facility design team of current operations and to evaluate proposed changes associated with the facility design, including the marriage of technological advances into an effective animal research operation at their home institution. Knowledge of basic animal facility design principles is essential, as is awareness of the options available for management of a successful vivarium. Serving as an institutional steward of fiscal responsibility (both during design and construction and the post-occupancy operation) is also significant. Webinar participants will learn about these roles and responsibilities and possible ways to prepare for facility design efforts at one's home institution. The speaker will discuss the: • Roles and responsibilities of laboratory animal professionals in animal facility design including: o Informing the design team of current operations o Evaluating proposed changes associated with the facility design • Possible ways to prepare for facility design efforts at one’s home institution, such as: o Combining technological advances into an effective animal research operation o Planning to use newly available options for management of a successful vivarium
